From that date onward, Saanio & Riekkola has been the named entity responsible for all of the activities of the A-Insinöörit Rock and Environmental Engineering business unit.

The A-Insinöörit Rock and Environmental Engineering business unit now consists of two divisions operating in Saanio & Riekkola Oy: the Nuclear Waste Management division and the Underground Construction division. With this rearrangement, all Nuclear Waste Management services are centralized, which helps us streamline our operations and provide expanded service to our clients both in Finland and abroad.
 
Matti Kalliomäki will serve as the The Underground Construction division manager and Jorma Autio as the Nuclear Waste Management division manager.

The annual B+Tech Oy / Clay Technology AB summer seminar was held in Nuuksio on August 15-16th in order to foster further cooperation in the field of repository design and testing. Presentations ranged in subject from modelling of wetting, friction and pellets to test design and observations from laboratory tests on factors influencing clay behavior and properties.

B+Tech participated in the EBS Task Force meeting held in Prague on May 9-12th and the CODE_BRIGHT Workshop held in Barcelona on May 19th, with presentations relating to the numerical simulation of heat dissipation, open gaps and demonstration tests of engineered barriers in spent nuclear fuel repositories.

B+Tech participated in SKB EBS Task Force meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland, on 10.-12.11.2015. M. Hassan and T. Laurila presented fundamental swelling and homogenization tests that are used to validate and calibrate thermo-hydro-mechanical-chemical models that predict the evolution of bentonite clays on saturation. We were also proud of the contribution of our collaborators, UCLM University in Ciudad Real, Spain, in the meeting.

We are happy to have had the opportunity to host a group led by prof. W. Solowski from Aalto University’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering on 16.11.2015. We are looking forward to continued co-operation with them and the consortium of project THEBES (a project from the Finnish public fund for nuclear waste related research).

The annual summer seminar between B+Tech and Clay Technology was held this year at Ringsjöstrand on the coast of Sweden on August 10–11, 2015. Among the topics discussed were the repository testing of buffer and backfill and the interaction between the two components.

B+Tech was invited by the Laboratory for Soil Mechanics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne for a visit on August 24–25, 2015.

The A-Insinöörit Group has acquired all shares and full ownership of B+Tech Oy on June 30th 2015 by purchasing 50% of the shares from Clay Technology Sweden AB. B+Tech Oy also signed a cooperation agreement with Clay Technology in order to continue the fruitful collaboration in the future.

We at B+Tech Oy are confident that the purchase will strengthen our company in many ways and make it possible to grow and enter into the international markets in close cooperation with Saanio & Riekkola and the A-Insinöörit Group.

B+Tech is presenting a poster on the gel formation of montmorillonite particles at the 5th International Colloids Conference in Amsterdam on June 21–24, 2015.

B+Tech participated in the EBS Task Force meeting and 7th Workshop of CODE_BRIGHT in Barcelona on May 18–21, 2015.

B+Tech also attended the LucoeX Conference and Workshop for full-scale demonstration tests in technology development of repositories for disposal of radioactive waste in Oskarshamn on June 2–4, 2015.

New beam test equipment for measuring the mechanical properties of clays has been implemented at the B+Tech laboratory.

B+Tech is a member of the Code_Bright consortium and has been actively involved in the development plan for the finite element code Code_Bright. In addition to investigating the gap modelling issues discussed at the 5th Workshop on Code_Bright, B+Tech has submitted a Master's thesis proposal for studying the variation of shear modulus with strain, and contributed to the following code enhancements implemented by UPC during the development period May 2013 to May 2014:

  • Quadratic tetrahedrons
  • 2D triangles for 3D tetrahedral mesh
  • Drucker-Prager model with parameters for the canister.

M.Sc. (Physics) Pieti Marjavaara starts working at B+Tech Oy in August. This supports the future development of B+Tech Oy, one objective being to further develop the Finnish high level expertise on nuclear waste management and to make that also available to international clients. At the same time we will maintain and strengthen the Finnish expertise. Pieti has expertise in Nuclear Waste Management projects, project management (IPMA certification) and he has been the author of  Posiva Working report 2012-62 ”Customized Bentonite Pellets: Manufacturing, Performance and Gap Filling Properties”. He is presently working at VTT.

B+Tech personnel visited the Keramost Plc. bentonite mine in Rokle and Josef Regional Underground Research Centre (Josef URC) near Prague, Czech Rebublic, in May.

Xavier Pintado contributed to presentations titled "Modelling of down-scale tests" and "THM Modelling of Final Disposal Repository in Onkalo Project" at the CODE_BRIGHT Workshop held at UPC in Barcelona, Spain, 13 May 2014.

Jari Martikainen and Xavier Pintado participated in the SKB Engineered Barrier System Task Force meeting at CRIEPI in Tokyo, Japan, 20-22 May 2014. Jari presented the homogenization tests carried out at B+Tech, while Xavier discussed the conducted down-scaled tests and the implementation of advanced soil mechanics models in COMSOL Multiphysics.

Noora Kanerva was appointed the new Laboratory Manager of B+Tech.

B+Tech personnel took part in the Naisten Kymppi running event, 25 May 2014.

B+Tech Oy signed a new 5 year agreement with Posiva Oy.

B+Tech Oy signed a new 5 year agreement with Posiva Oy.

B+Tech Oy arranged training in cooperation with National Instruments on measurement software and hardware. Specifically, CompactDAQ devices, LabVIEW and SignalExpress.

The first thermal THM test at intermediate scale was started at B+Tech Oy to simulate buffer behaviour and related processes under a thermal load.

The KBS-3H full-scale Multi Purpose Test (MPT) at Äspö was started.  B+Tech in cooperation with AITEMIN from Spain designed the instrumentation consisting roughly of 250 transducers together with a wireless monitoring system and installed it onsite.

The B+Tech Oy young generation project has been fruitful and Teemu is a fresh father of a baby girl.

The B+Tech and S&R annual skiing competition was held on March 18th at Oittaa – luckily we still had enough snow!

Holiday greetings to all of our clients, colleagues and staff. We are happy to announce that instead of buying gifts and sending cards, B+Tech Oy will make a substantial donation to the New Children’s Hospital Project 2017. The Children’s Hospital in Helsinki treats children from all over Finland. Only the smallest patients with the most serious conditions are cared for in this hospital.  The current facilities in Lastenklinikka and Lastenlinna, built in 1946 and 1948, respectively, are in desperate need of renovation in order to bring them to  the level expected of modern hospitals. Small rooms and poor ventilation are just some of the problems experienced by both patients and staff. Therefore, a new children’s hospital is planned to be constructed by 2017. In order to meet this ambitious schedule, a charitable project was initiated to collect 30 million Euros in private donations.

B+Tech participated in a BELBaR Workshop on Model Development for Clay Erosion in Dilute Water, 12-13 November  2013, Tuusula, Finland.

Teemu Laurila, Xavier Pintado and Petri Sane participated in the SKB Engineered Barrier System Task Force meeting at the University of Bern, 4-7 November 2013. Xavier discussed the interpretation of strain gauge signals for measurement of swelling pressure on transparent, plastic cells for downscaled tests of buffer behaviour. Petri and Teemu presented experimental and theoretical aspects of mechanical erosion of bentonite. Mechanical erosion may occur during saturation of the buffer and backfill systems and B+Tech is heavily involved in research to understand how the processes occur and quantifying the effects.

Tim Schatz was invited to give a presentation on chemical erosion at the “New insights into the repository’s engineered barriers 2013” symposium arranged by the Swedish National Council on Nuclear Waste, 20-21 November 2013 (http://www.karnavfallsradet.se/utfragningar-seminarier/new-insights-into-the-repository-s-engineered-barriers-2013).

B+Tech participated in Euradwaste ’13, the 8th EC Conference on the Management of Radioactive Waste, 14-17 October 2013, Vilnius, Lithuania.

B+Tech participated in a BELBaR Topical Meeting on Artificial Fracture Testing, 22-23 October 2013, Prague, Czech Republic.

The B+Tech office has been renovated. The new premises reflect our goal, which is to ensure the safety of the environment for future generations. The new office has better acoustics, new colors and a peacefulness that reflect our relationship with nature. The new layout has also enhanced the flow of information, which is one key component in the company competence development. There are several group working areas and different rooms for different types of meetings.

B+Tech has analyzed new market areas in cooperation with Spinverse with promising results.

We had the pleasure of hosting Doctoral Student Laura Asensio as visiting researcher from UCLM University, Castilla la Mancha, Spain. The work by Laura and her supervising professor Vicente Navarro on advancing THMC models is bringing quantitative understanding on the behavior of the bentonite buffer under conditions of free swelling and mechanical erosion. We are priviledged to work with them, and particularly look forward to performing more experiments that aim to provide a solid foundation for their models.

The B+Tech/Clay Technology summer-seminar at Mossbylund in Sweden. A great environment for a great seminar with a visit to the famous Alestenar.

B+Tech hosted a workshop on experiments and modeling of free swelling and mechanical erosion of bentonite materials. The venue was the Siikaranta resort in the north of Espoo, bordering Nuuksio natural park. Present were scientists from UCLM University Spain, Jyväskylä University, VTT Technical Research Institute, and Posiva Oy. Many thanks to the participants for fruitful presentations and discussions, not to mention pleasant company!

B+Tech maintains an active participation in the SKB Task Force for developing computational tools and models for the bentonite EBS (Engineered Barrier System). Task Force meeting was held at the Imperial College in London, M. Hassan and T. Laurila participated from B+Tech. M. Hassan presented B+Tech’s work on the Task Force’s homogenization task 1, in which the CODE_BRIGHT software and Barcelona Expansive Model were used to predict axial homogenization of a sample of EBS buffer bentonite starting from saturated conditions.

From the 5th to the 7th of March, several B+Tech staff members participated in the first BELBaR (Bentonite Erosion effects on the Long term performance of the engineered Barrier and Radionuclide transport) workshop held in Helsinki. For more information see http://www.belbar.eu.

B+Tech held its annual workshop for its staff at the end of April. The day was spent looking back over the events and activities of the past year and preparing for upcoming challenges.

Posiva submitted its construction license application for the final repository on 28th of December 2012. B+Tech experts participated in preparation of the documents and the scientific work.

B+Tech personnel visited the Sibelco (Kristiinankaupunki, Finland) and Minelco (Luleå, Sweden) bentonite processing plants in September and November, respectively.

The Spanish ambassador visited B+Tech premises and became acquainted with B+Tech activities in November.

During 2012, B+Tech personnel participated in training courses on sample handling and strategic marketing

B+Tech Oy arranged a project management training workshop for employees and stakeholders based on the Cadence project management system. The eventual objective is that key B+Tech project managers will obtain IMPA project management certification.

B+Tech research personnel visited the Friedland clay quarry in September to determine the acquisition chain for backfill production.

B+Tech personnel participated in training courses on CodeBright modeling, clay mineralogy, and strain gauge installation and measurement during this summer and fall.

B+Tech received initial training focused on International Project Management Association (IPMA) certification.

B+Tech hosted a visiting researcher from Universidad de Castilla La Mancha (UCLM) in September.

B+Tech quality assurance system will be audited in November and December 2010. The system is based on the ISO 9001:2008 and 14001:2004 standards, the FIDIC Code of Ethics, the OECD Principles on Good Laboratory Practice, and the OHSAS 18001:2007 Occupational Health and Safety Management System.

Novel large-scale test has been developed and started on buffer performance. The test simulates buffer behaviour under realistic conditions so that the essential features occur at full scale.

B+Tech has doubled its laboratory space. New laboratory is used mainly for THM and large scale testing.
